Photography help us to pause and remember life as it is now, forever.

What to expect from your family shoot

During your session, I aim for a blend of candid and "formal" family portraits as best as possible.

For Families with younger children, I do this by encouraging lots of cuddles and family play while doing some sort of activity that feels natural to your family.

Some ideas of this could be:

- Going for a walk in nature

- Going for a swim or splashing in the ocean at the beach

- Baking a cake at home

- Riding bikes or skating on the promenade

- Getting a milkshake at a pretty cafe'

- Letting the kids play dress up at home

- Building a fort in the lounge

Shoot with newborns are a little bit different and are all about lots of cuddles and kisses from

mom and dad and some beautiful portraits of baby.

When to book a shoot with your baby?

If you are wanting to book a newborn shoot, Id recommend booking with me within the first 2 weeks of baby's life. Some babies develop a bit of baby acne from day 15. If that doesn't phase you, then anytime before 2 months. These photos are often of a sleeping baby and sweet family cuddles.

If you are wanting a slightly more interactive baby, then booking from 2months is advised and planning the shoot around their awake window is advised .

What to wear?

While I don't like to be too prescriptive about this, the clothes you wear for your shoot really do

play a huge role in the overall look of the photos and the right outfits can help make your

images timeless. With that in mind, here are a few points to consider when deciding what to

wear.

COLOURS:

I typically recommend sticking with neutrals and earthy tones. Neutrals doesn’t means just

grey and brown there are neutral of every colour (mustard yellow, forest/sage green, dusty pink/purple navy blue, burnt orange etc) stay way from bright , florescent colours as well as bright oranges, bright pinks and bright reds.

When piking outfits for the whole family- try avoid too much matching , and consider how the

colours work together. ( generally if you stick with the muted neutrals- they look great

together)

PATTERNS & PRINTS:

Avoid big, loud, chunky, crazy patterns. The smaller or more subtle, the better! If the pattern is

too loud, it will distract from your faces. This goes for clothing with cartoon characters and

large name branding too.

MOVEMENT:

Wear something you can move in, theres going to be lots of tickles, cuddles and walking after

you little one, so pick something you are comfortable in. Movement can also be created in the

form of a "flowy" dress or a "twirly" skirt.

PROPS:

When I think “props”, my mind flashes through all of the cringe-worthy Pinterest photos I’ve

seen ,but props don’t have to be cheesy! Props could be a fedora hat, a picnic and picnic blanket or your family pet.

HAIR AND MAKEUP:

Photographs always tone down your makeup, so feel free to go a bit bolder than you would

normally do. If you would like to book a professional to do your hair and makeup, here are a few of my recommendations:

Danielle Jacobs

Algriax Ferreira

Cecile Fourie

Kirsten Murphy

What time of day is recommended to shoot at?

Getting the right light for your outdoor family shoots in crucial to get that

beautiful warm light and avoid any harsh shadows and crinkled faces.

This golden hour ,as its known, is the hour before sunset. Depending on the

location and the mountains/trees around it- this may be slightly earlier in some

places.

During summer this often means shooting from about 18:30/19:00 onwards. If

your child is usually asleep by this time I recommend doing a later nap in the day

and feeding dinner before the shoot. This often extends them a bit plus all the

extra attention from mom and dad and doing a fun adventure helps to keep them

in a good mood :)

If an evening/sunset shoot is not possible, I recommend shooting somewhere with a bit more covering like a forest or home environment.

When choosing a location here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Ease- can your family move freely in this space?
  • End product- do the colours of this location blend with the are of your house you want to hang the printed photos?

FAQ

Do you Travel?

Yes! I cover 50km return fuel in each package and the rest is billed at AA rates per Km

How many photos do we get?

Quality is much more important than quantity for me, so if you are after 1000's of images for the best bang for your buck then I'm probably not the photographer for you. I do not limit images to a set number but rather choose the best of the best and deliver those. For an hours shoot you will receive roughly 60 Images.

How do we get our photos?

All images are delivered via an online gallery. From here you can download the high resolution images as well as web res versions. Custom usb flash drives can also be purchased at an Addtional cost.

Do you retouch photos?

Image retouching ( using photoshop to alter more than the colour or crop of the image)

I do yes, this is charged at an additional rate per image.

Whats your turn around time?

Couple and Family shoots are 3-4 week delivery. with a sneak peek delivered the week after the shoot.

How do we book you?

To secure your date I'll need a 50 retainer fee/deposit.

What if it rains on our shoot day?

If you have flexibility we can reschedule the shoot. If not we can find a location that is indoors and sheltered from the rain. The same applies to wind.

Is the retainer/deposit refundable?

Unfortunately not. I only take on a few family shoots per month so when I accept one, I turn down other bookings.

Can I have the RAW/unedited images?

Nope sorry. We give a selection of the best images from the day and carefully edit each one. Giving over Raw images doesn’t properly display our work and can negatively affect our brand if edited or displayed differently. If you wish to have more images from your day(more than an additional 10) additional editing fees will apply.

What if my kid is in screams the whole shoot?

Ive seen it all, and we always manage to get some magic- even if its in the last 10 min of the shoot. Also .. there will be some fun photos for their 21st ;)
